In today’s digital landscape, where AI-generated imagery is becoming increasingly prevalent, the need for authentic, trustworthy visual content has never been more crucial. Believe it or not, they are all AI-generated. By now, we can all unanimously agree that AI's capabilities are beyond impressive, and for so much of our time here, it will improve our capacity to live more meaningful lives. On the other hand, it will create some significant distrust/disconnect issues. Whether something is real will become one of the first questions asked; even worse, when something is real, it might come across as incomprehensible; it will be assumed AI.
The human mind's capacity is incredible at discerning authenticity, but we are entering into a great unknown. From people to places to experience through photos and video, the better AI gets, the further away we will be able to recognize it. I suppose that's the end goal, Right? The issue, or the saving grace, is humans will always crave humanity; it's in our DNA. We will always crave authenticity, reality, energy, connection, and a sense of place, sight, smell, and feel. So, thankfully, for this reason, real travel will never be overshadowed by its artificial counterpart, and a photo will never replace the real thing.
What prompted me to write this article is that I am already starting to doubt my first impression of things I see digitally. The best creators and storytellers are the most vulnerable, as they have been capturing content that is hard even to believe. The global population now has AI as our scapegoat for doubt. In reality, the world is beautiful beyond our present capacity to imagine, and it will constantly change and evolve in ways that will inspire us. Tools will need to be created to separate something that humans created vs. something entirely artificial, but where the line will be drawn will always be a moving target. If you do post-production on a video or image, enhance particular features. Is it still real? Where does authentic art meet artificial?
Although the first set of AI-generated images is compelling, they do not build emotional trust with the viewer.
